Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D) announced on Thursday that starting December 1, qualified patients in the state will be able to receive a doctor’s recommendation to access medical marijuana.
Under a law the governor signed last year, regulators have been working to stand up the state’s medical cannabis program, as stated in Marijuana Moment. Over 150 doctors are already certified to issue marijuana recommendations, and the state is also taking steps to simplify the registration process for patients.
The Kentucky Medical Cannabis Practitioner Directory
Beginning December 1, the online directory, called the “Kentucky Medical Cannabis Practitioner Directory,” will go live, allowing patients to find practitioners nearest to them. As more medical providers gain authorization to participate in the program, they will be added to the portal, according to Spectrum News 1. The governor’s office said the directory will be available at kymedcan.ky.gov.
The medical cannabis program begins January 1.
“All of this is an attempt to have the program up and running as quickly as we can,” Beshear said during his statehouse news conference.
Meanwhile, Beshear also announced that an initial licensing lottery for prospective medical marijuana dispensaries in nine out of 11 regions of the state will take place next Monday. Another lottery for the remaining two regions is set for December 16, according to Marijuana Moment.
